No website necessary: The contact information stored in the DNS is readily available and efficiently delivered to any device without the need for a website or a webmaster.
Speed: The Domain Name System is optimized for speed. Because it is DNS-based, a .tel lookup takes just a fraction of a second, and is much quicker than loading a typical web page.
Real-Time: Whenever you update your data in the DNS, the change “goes live” immediately.
Improved Control: Traditionally, search engines are forced to “read” entire web pages and guess the keywords. The .tel uses the data you supply to the DNS to tell search engines exactly where the keywords are, thereby improving your control over your search results.
Optimized for mobile devices: The traffic generated by a .tel lookup is so small that it remains inexpensive for consumers. The data is also presented in such a simple way that the .tel easily integrates into address books and allows for advanced navigation on all mobile devices.
Scalable: The DNS is a fully scalable and decentralized system that already handles billions of queries each day. It is perfectly suited to become the most reliable global directory of contact information and keywords.
Global: The DNS is ubiquitous. Everything on the Internet uses the DNS all the time and all information stored within the DNS is globally accessible from any device connected to the internet.
Encryptable: Data stored in the DNS may be encrypted so that only authorized users may access it, ensuring total privacy.
What is .tel?
The .tel is a service that allows individuals and businesses alike to store and manage all their contact information and keywords directly in the DNS without the need to build, host or manage a website. For more information, see .tel for businesses and .tel for individuals.
Why is .tel different than other Top Level Domains (TLDs)?
The value of a .tel domain lies with the ability to host personal (or corporate) contact information directly in the DNS, which can then be universally accessible. This stands in contrast to the typical use of the DNS for other TLDs, in which the DNS only provides a mapping between domain names and IP addresses.
Can I protect my private data?
The .tel enables you to protect your private data, allowing it to be seen only by people you authorize. For more information, please see How do I protect my Private Data.
When can I buy a .tel domain?
Registering .tel domains will occur in three phases: Sunrise, Landrush and General Availability. For more information on each phase see Launch Information.
How can I buy a .tel domain?
You can only purchase your .tel domain online through an ICANN accredited registrar. Telnic will publish a list of all participating registrars at launch.
Can I buy a .tel domain in advance?
No pre-registration is available. Anyone offering advance registration is not authorized to do so.
For what term can I buy a .tel domain?
Typically, registrars will allow you to register domain names for up to 10 years.
How will trademarks be protected?
A preferential registration period called Sunrise will allow trademark owners to protect their intellectual property.
What are the restrictions on a .tel domain?
The minimum number of characters in a .tel domain is 3 and the maximum number is 63 not including the .tel suffix. Every domain must contain at least one letter from a-z or “A to Z” in standard US ASCII script. No domain can begin or end with a hyphen nor can a domain have a hyphen in the 3rd and 4th position. A .tel domain may not consist purely of digits. The .tel naming conventions are described in detail in the Acceptable Use Policy.
Can I transfer or sell a .tel domain name?
You can sell or transfer a .tel domain just as you would with other domain names.
How do I resolve a dispute regarding a .tel domain name?
.tel domain names are subject to the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), which establishes a procedure for resolving many trademark disputes relating to domain names. More information on the (UDRP) is available.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DNS VERSUS WEB-BASED SOLUTIONS
The .tel is a Top Level Domain using innovative DNS technology to power a communicationbased Internet service.
In comparison to current web-based solutions, .tel provides a much more structured, efficient, and reliable offering.
The following table highlights key advantages of the .tel DNS solution over traditional webbased solutions:
||.tel DNS/ NAPTR-based solution
||Traditional web-based/ Address record solution
||NAPTR records are very small, mostly transmitted over User Datagram Protocol
(UDP) and extremely quick
|Webpages are large, transmitted over HTTP connections and can be slow especially on mobile telephones
||Due to the small size of NAPTR records, they can be cheap to transmit over mobile data networks
||Viewing webpages on mobile phones can become expensive due to their size
||Publishing contact data can be done in a few simple clicks
||Publishing webpages is a complex and time-consuming activity
||DNS is designed to be highly scalable
||Web-based services become expensive and cumbersome to run in large volumes
||The DNS-based solution is inherently a globally distributed system that is scalable and has no single point of failure
||Web-based services are prone to downtime and single points of failure
||DNS-based services are open and accessible without the need for logging in or becoming a member
||Web-based services require users to login before a service can be used
||.tel will receive exceptional visibility as an emerging standard for communications because it is a Top Level Domain
||Web-based services are much more commonplace and hence do not benefit from the market visibility available to newly issued Top Level Domains
||The DNS-based solution has no need to construct and maintain a website
||Web-based solutions require construction and maintenance of a website
